WITH STREET ART AND GRAFFITI, BACCHUS AND WINE HAVE TAKEN OVER WALLS IN CITIES WORLWIDE

Street art is produced in public spaces in a number of different forms : graffiti, stickers, posters, video projections, light installations, etc. For the last fifty years, urban graffiti has become more and more visible: on walls, pavements, roads, parks and monuments, even in former quarries. Spray paint and markers are tools of choice for street artists. While some see graffiti as undesirable, others consider its most elaborate forms a type of art that deserves attention.

The exhibition covers a wide thematic spectrum: Bacchus, the promotion of wine, drunkenness, tastings… Many pieces of graffiti come from the former quarry of Comblanchien de Villars-Fontaine, in the Burgundy region’s Hautes Côtes de Nuits. They were made in 2016 and 2017, during the Street Art on the Roc Festival. Street artists depicting wine here were referring to the Climats du vignoble de Bourgogne [Burgundy specific vineyard site combining vine plots, grape variety and know-how], added in 2015 to Unesco’s list of World Heritage Sites.
